In the middle of the jungle

SITEL EMPLOYEES CHARITY CORNER

Probably the majority of employees in Sitel take part in a charity or plan to do so. Today, we are glad to present Proyecto Suwa, supported by Sitel-Disney French Agent Samira Mahamdi.
Imagine living in a place where the political and social situation do not allow your children to have a proper education. This happens all over the world, such as in the Achuar territory in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Samira Mahamdi explained that she and her partner “established this educational project in 2014 to support. The Achuar people are currently engaged in a number of political struggles for autonomy over their rainforest (against oil prospectors) and their waterways. They have established ecotourism projects as an alternative to selling their territory, and they want to learn English to work with the tourists, as well as to publicise their struggles internationally”.
In this situation, the Achuar people would like to undertake ecotourism initiatives to promote their territory and make a living working with tourists. The main concern of the community is to provide a good education to their young ones, who do not have enough school materials or resources, so that they can develop themselves and work in tourism. As Samira explains, Proyecto Suwa is a non-profit program, 100% independent: “Our role is to take care of recruiting and organising the arrival of volunteer teachers to work with the children teaching English and literacy skills so that the next generations may become well educated, being able to develop and enrich their territory. They could be tourist guide and make profits while showing their culture”.
Samira and her partner were the first of the 15 teaching volunteers that have entered the community to continue the project. “Living in the Amazon is the most exciting experience I have ever had. In Achuar territory, there are no roads, no shops, no running water or electricity, however, the jungle resources and this community culture motivates you”, said Samira.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of the community, Proyecto Suwa needs all the support possible. You can help by giving money, school material or just liking/sharing the project’s Facebook page.
